Cleaning Surface for Acid Etching

Make sure that you pre-clean the concrete surface before acid etching to remove any build-up or dirt or other debris that might interfere with the acid solution contacting the surface. Oil and grease can insulate the concrete from the acid etch solution and thus prevent it from working.

Of greatest importance is the complete removal of the acid solution after etching, because residues of the acid or its reaction products can cause coating failure. The acid and residue have to be removed by scrubbing and multiple rinsing steps until the pH of the surface is neutral, i.e. no more than 1 pH unit less than the rinse water.
